Cameroon – SW: Limbe Old Market allegedly burned by a young man from Bamenda

The facts date back to the night of 31 March 2017. The person accused of having committed the crime is in custody at the Central Police Station in Limbe. He said that his act would bring him the sum of 100,000 FCFA.

Information is relayed by the daily newspaper Le Jour of April 3, 2017. On the night of March 31, 2017 the market of Limbe in the Southwest Region was reduced to ashes. The “Limbe Old Market” saw its thirty shops reduced in a heap of ashes. The person accused of having put down this act, Paul Vincent Suh Fuinwie, according to the daily, was arrested by the vigilante committee on duty in this trading area. The latter was handed over to the law enforcement forces. According to the newspaper he confessed.

Paul Vincent Suh Fuinwie, who was taken into custody at the Central Police Station in Limbe, said he had left Bamenda in the North West Region to come commit his act that would give him “the sum of 100,000 CFA francs“. He said he received an advance of 50,000 FCFA. The rest, he had to collect it once the Limbe Old Market burned down. According to the residents of the market, the defendant crossed the barrier of the market on 31 March 2017. It was then 3 am.

He was arrested by the guard. He made him understand that he was going to his house. But 20 minutes later, we heard a loud noise in the market at 80 meters from our position. The guard got up and saw a gentleman sneaking into the corridor. The guard stopped him and took him to the fence. The market was on fire, “says a member of the vigilance committee.

An inquiry was opened at the Central Commissariat of Limbe. Bernard Okalia Bilai, Governor of the Southwest Region, said the security arrangements will be strengthened.
