Camtel, the incumbent telecoms operator, claims 16 billion FCFA to the state

Cameroon Telecommunications (Camtel), the incumbent telecom operator in Cameroon, is demanding 16 billion FCFA from the state. This slate, explains the company, proceeds much more than a writing game with the Ministry of Finance.

Concretely, whenever it is necessary, a bipartite commission carries out a compensation of the debts crossed between us. The last one took place at the beginning of this year 2017, for the years 2015-2016. At the end, it is still a balance in favor of Camtel that emerged as with the 2013-2014 compensation, a new amount of 16 billion FCFA, reveals an authorized source within Camtel.

The source adds that,

due to some known cash pressure, Camtel does not receive payment of monthly consumption since the beginning of 2017.

As of September 2016, the company had suspended voice and internet services in some government offices for unpaid bills. According to the figures provided by the incumbent telecom operator, the State and its dismemberments concentrated the bulk of the claims, for an estimated total amount of more than 65 billion FCFA.
