Cameroon eliminated in semi-final of AfCON Volleyball by Egypt (3-0)

Story Highlights

  • Cameroonians still have the opportunity to qualify for the next world championship.

If Cameroon wants to be present in Bulgaria and Italy in September 2018 for the 19th World Championship, the Indomitable Lions must beat the Fennecs of Algeria this October 28 in the match of the 3rd place. Cameroonians and Algerians were beaten yesterday after the semifinals of the AfCON in Cairo.

In the first match, Algeria faced a strong resistance to Tunisia before losing in five games (25-27, 25-14, 21-25, 25-23, 17-15). In the second semifinal, Cameroon could do nothing against the Egyptian ogre, undefeated in the competition since 2005. Our national team lost in three small heats (26-24, 25-22, 25-23) .

A score that does not reflect the appearance of a match that has experienced a real battle between the two formations. Cameroon even led long set of the first set before being caught at 24 everywhere and be overtaken. The same story will be repeated in the other two rounds during which Ahmed Mbutgam and his teammates are dominated in the last moments. Beaten by the same team in the final in 2011, Cameroon could not take revenge.

At the finish, Egypt made a strong impression. The host country is now in the race for a 7th place rank. A record! For that, it will be necessary to win the match of this Saturday against Tunisia, a remake of the last final. Cameroon will try to beat Algeria and get a double reward: the podium and the qualification for the world championship.
